Council 9551 is a typical Council from Chatham, Ontario. For five years it has been awarded the distinction of being the Best Council in its Division by the Ontario State Council. Two of those years it had also the distinction of being the Best Overall Council in Ontario. Pictures
The Council has a membership of around 150 and is very active in the Church and in the Community. Most of the members are involved in various Parish ministries such as:
Eucharistic Ministers at Sunday Liturgy * Eucharistic Ministers to the Shut Ins * Visitors to the Sick and the Shut Ins * Ushers * Readers * Commentators * Choir * Funeral group
In order to raise funds for charity work, the members run Bingos, and set up parking at the Annual Jaycee Fair in Chatham. These funds have helped various needs in the community such as:
Transition House [home/shelter for runaway teenagers] * Women's Centre [centre for battered and abused women] * Sending children from lower income families to camp * Outreach for Hunger
For some of the projects the Council works hand in hand with the Catholic Women's League, who, at St. Ursula's Parish have just celebrated their 45th anniversary. These projects include:
W.R.A.P. - White Ribbon Against Pornography * Memorial Mass

The Council's Youth programmes include
Sponsoring a Scout Group - [Scout Troop, Cub Pack, and at times a Beaver Colony - youngest section of Scouts Canada] * Supporting the V.I.P. [Values, Influences, and Peers] programme at St Ursula's and Georges P. Vanier Schools, in conjunction with the Chatham Police Force * Poster Contests during Vocation Awareness Week in February * Poster Contests for Drug and Alcohol Abuse Awareness * Pumpkin Carving Contests at Halloween * Christmas Poster Contests * Outings for the Altar Servers of the Parish
The members have fun in what they do, because they work together as a "big family". Some of these fun activities include: Running bingos at Senior Citizens' Homes, and providing the prizes * Cooking breakfast for the parishioners after special Sunday Masses * Organizing parish picnics * providing and cooking all the food, running games for the children, and in short having a good time * Celebrating Mothers' Day, by Singing at Masses as an impromptu choir, and distributing flowers to the Ladies * Remembering deceased brothers
